Flynn Esther is a director and photographer working across broadcast TV and branded commissions.
Specialising in intimate social-issue and music-led documentaries, her work is driven by an innate curiosity as to what shapes a person, often exploring the intersection of identity, relationships and environment.
She has worked across a variety of films for the BBC, Channel 4, Sky, Channel 5, Discovery and Netflix. From following a group of young people who have grown up in the British care system (Kids, Channel 4) and the Missing Persons investigation unit in South Carolina (Missing: Dead or Alive, Netflix) to documenting the build up to Boyzone’s last ever arena show (Boyzone: One for the road, Sky).
Her debut single film The Trials of Pa Salieu (BBC) is an intimate portrait of the British-Gambian musician at a pivotal moment in his life, rebuilding his career after prison. The film explores issues facing young Black men in Britain today, including poverty, grief and injustices within the criminal justice system. The film was praised across its preview weekend.
Outside making documentaries for broadcast television, Flynn shoots documentary photography, inspired by her own adventures and the life and characters around her. She also creates social media content for her own Instagram platform, @__outsider, and partners with brands on short-form social, brand films, photography and long-form editorial.

Adventurer, filmmaker and photographer, available for brand collaborations worldwide.
Now that you've seen the work, I want to introduce myself.
Adventure wasn't always part of my life. I grew up in a low-income, single-parent household in inner-city London, where access to the outdoors, travel and exploration was out of reach. In my twenties, a job in TV finally gave me the means to discover the world, and I became obsessed with meeting new people, with the outdoors, and with all the exciting ways you can move your body through it.
Since then I've bike packed across countries, hiked solo in remote landscapes, climbed mountains and lived out of my van, to name a few. I've chosen, again and again, a life driven by curiosity and my own idea of what a life well lived looks like.
My social media platform __out.sider is rooted in documentary storytelling, combining personal tales with filmmaking and photography to bring stories of adventure to life.
The Why
Being able to go on adventures requires a certain level of privilege that isn't accessible to everyone, as it once wasn't for me. My ambition is to build a platform that inspires people to get outside and move in nature, whilst also making it a more accessible and inclusive space.
Working with me
Twelve years directing and shooting documentaries for broadcast television has given me a solid understanding of how to tell stories that hold audiences. I know what really connects people to something is a human thread, and finding the heart of a story is a true and instinctual strength of mine.
Those same years have been spent operating cameras professionally, so the content I deliver is finished to a broadcast standard. I sit somewhere between a content creator and a commercials Director or Director of Photography, a more affordable option than the latter without compromising on craft or quality.
I'm open to working with brands in a couple of ways. If a partnership feels right, I can share your product or story through __out.sider, weaving it into the world I've built there. I can also create content for you separately from my own platforms, whether that's short-form social, brand films, photography or long-form editorial.
I'm interested in partnering with brands who share the same values and ethos, and who want to create work that is not only visually distinct but that actually makes people feel something.
